CAUSES
- Trauma
SYMPTOMS
- Pain
- Bruising
- Deformity
- Lack of shoulder function
PREOP
- X-ray
- Occasional CT scan, evaluate fracture pattern and severity
RECOVERY
- 10 days suture removal
- 2 weeks sling
- 2 months physical therapy 2 x per week.
- Expectation is full range of motion and no pain with return to full activity. Sports by 8 weeks.
TECHNIQUE
The shoulder is fixed with a special plate and screws designed specifically for the clavicle
DAY OF SURGERY
- General anesthesia
- 90 minute surgery
- Outpatient
WHEN TO HAVE SURGERY?
- Fracture displacement necessitates surgery for shoulder function
- Patient is athlete who desires expeditious return to sport
COMPLICATIONS
- Rare. 5-10% of patients request plate out after surgery.
