CAUSES

  • Trauma
  • Sports Injury

PREOP

  • X-ray
  • MRI Scan-Evaluate all ligaments, meniscus, cartilage

TREATMENT CARTILAGE INJURY OF THE KNEE

  • Multiple types of surgery are available including:
  • Microfracture plus biocartilage
  • Autograft OATS: transfer of cartilage from elsewhere in the knee
  • Allograft OATS: transfer of fresh donor cartilage
  • Cell Based Therapy (MACI): cartilage is biopsied and grown in lab and reimplanted as a disc
  • Treatment is individualized based on size of defect, location of defect, and age of patient

DAY OF SURGERY

  • General and block anesthesia
  • Surgery can last 2-3 hours depending on the complexity of the injury.
  • 1-2 night hospital stay

CONCOMITANT PROCEDURES

  • Sometimes osteotomy, ligament reconstruction, or meniscus transplant are needed

RECOVERY

  • Partial or non-weightbearing for 4-6 weeks
  • 3 months physical therapy after
  • Non-impact activity: 4 months
  • Impact activity: 6 months

SUCCESS RATE

  • 85% return to sport
  • 10-15% reoperation rate
